Thomas Jefferson, One of the Founding Fathers of America says this:

"No one sees with greater pleasure than myself the progress of reason in its advances towards rational Christianity. When we shall have done away the incomprehensible jargon of the Trinitarian arithmetic, that three are one, and one is three; when we shall have knocked down the artificial scaffolding, reared to mask from view the simple structure of Jesus; when, in short, we shall have unlearned everything which has been taught since His day, and got back to the pure and simple doctrines He inculcated, we shall then be truly and worthily His disciples; and my opinion is that if nothing had ever been added to what flowed purely from His lips, the whole world would at this day have been Christian. I know that the case you cite, of Dr. Drake, has been a common one. The religion-builders have so distorted and deformed the doctrines of Jesus, so muffled them in mysticisms, fancies and falsehoods, have caricatured them into forms so monstrous and inconceivable, as to shock reasonable thinkers, to revolt them against the whole, and drive them rashly to pronounce its Founder an impostor. Had there never been a commentator, there never would have been an infidel.... I have little doubt that the whole of our country will soon be rallied to the unity of the Creator, and, I hope, to the pure doctrines of Jesus also."

Amen to "all" that.

I'm not accusing atheistbus of anything illegal itself except that my Ontario Human Rights would be violated and I could take the TTC to court, but I won't, I'd rather discuss the finer points of science, actually.

Its equivalent to you saying "Let's put a 'kick me' sign on Jeff", but nobody does anything. In this case, they put "kick me" signs on buses. I wrote to the chairman of the TTC about it before the campaign, and he told me that CBS Outdoor examines the law. So I printed up the law from an Ontario government website, wrote a letter and hand-delivered it to a real human at CBS Outdoor.

I have yet to ride in a bus with one of these bullseye on it, though. I mean its obvious, they got the closed-circuit camera system working on the buses mere days before your campaign started, and the matched it up with the "Do not assault, this includes spitting" sign campaign in their stations.

The chairman of the TTC really isn't fooling me that CBS Outdoor is somehow responsible. It just so happens I prefer to drive my $100,000 car instead of taking the freaking bus anyway. I just don't like guerrilla warfare in the streets of Toronto, that's all.

A rather harmless hobby like refuting atheism for all to see is more exciting.

Jeff K, Just because you/we/rationella like free speech doesn't mean we can't get pissed when someone says something.

as for the rest of that post... I don't know what you are accusing the atheist bus campaign of... you do know what they decided in ottawa, right? They basically decided that the atheist bus ads were protected by the charter and that municipal law is not exempt from the charter. Furthermore, they were advised that if they took us to court they would almost certainly lose...I was there at the rally and they gave us copies the memo that their solicitor was giving to all the councillors with his proffesional oppinion on the legality of the situation. Maybe a copy could be put up on this site?

Wasn't Thomas Jefferson well read in matters of law?

Let me cool your blood a bit; "anti-god" is certainly not a free-speech position, it sounds like a movement to interfere with something, to me. I thought atheistbus.ca was pretty clear on the free speech part, in as much as they don't know that signs are covered by Ontario Human rights law, and that TTC misuse of signs is covered by civil law, but no one here ever accused an atheist of being well read in matters of law, that I can recall. :)

There is also a campaign in Canada to get the "Probably no God" ads on buses in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, and other cities: http://www.atheistbus.ca/

Thanks for the links. Using a Thomas Jefferson quote in Seattle is a nice twist.
The photo of the anti-atheist sign makes may blood boil. I know atheist veterans who risked their lives to protect those who now call them traitors.

That's great.

I can't believe that anti-atheist Ads are allowed anywhere.

But I guess that's Free Speech.

I'm wondering what kind of signs we see now.

I guess anything goes as long as it's not vulgar.
